Required Items:

  • Milk frother
  • Brown sugar or flavored syrup
  • Espresso or ground coffee
  • Semi-skimmed milk
  • Spoon

How to Make Layered Coffee:

Step 1– First, make strong coffee such as espresso. If you do not have an espresso maker, use your regular coffee machine to make a strong cup of coffee. Preferably, use espresso roast ground coffee.

Step 2– Measure 2/3 glass of milk. Heat the milk in the microwave until it is hot but not boiling. If you do not have a microwave, you can use a hob or stovetop to heat the milk.

Step 3– Once hot, transfer the milk into a tall jug. Whisk the milk with a milk frother until it forms softly and looks velvety. Do not over-froth the milk since you will get stiff foam.

Step 4– Pour the frothed milk into a glass. Top the milk with a small layer of foam.

Step 5– Take a spoon and rest it against the edge of the glass. You should only lay the tip of the spoon in a way that it is about to touch the milk.

Step 6– Slowly start pouring the coffee you prepared with a kettle over the back surface of the spoon such that it flows into the glass. Ensure you maintain a thin stream of coffee while pouring it over the spoon. You should hold the kettle close to the glass to avoid creating a lot of movement in the glass. Excessive movement of the fluids will split the layers, which is not what you want.

Extra tip: You can work on the edge of your kitchen countertop such that you put the glass on the edge and keep the pot level with the glass. That way, you will find it easier to control the stream of coffee.

Step 7– Continue pouring the coffee slowly until you have 1/3 of coffee poured into 2/3 of milk.

Now, enjoy your stunning layered coffee. You can add sugar or flavored syrup to taste. Stir and enjoy.
